Mppa Convention: A Success

July 19—22, 2000

Trustee Andy Schlenker and the legal administrator Larry Friedman recently attended the Montana Police Protective Association (MPPA) Convention in Missoula, Montana. Trustee Schlenker addressed the delegates. He discussed the progress of the Legal Defense Fund over the last year, as well as recounting our successes in a variety of cases.

The MPPA Executive Board met with Schlenker and Friedman regarding extending the MPPA’s coverage to include administrative disciplinary matters. Since the convention, the LDF Board of Trustees has voted to research this matter and report back to the MPPA by mid-September. If you are an MPPA member and would like to provide input on this issue, please do not hesitate to do so. You may contact the Legal Defense Fund at ldf@delapro.com, or call 800-255-5610.

The MPPA held elections for officers; with Ken Dove of the Billings Police Department, elected President. The other officers are: First Vice President: Dave Jeseritz, Helena Police Department; Second Vice President: Dan Nelson, Great Falls Police Department; Treasurer: Jerry Williams, Butte – Silver Bow Law Enforcement Agency; and Secretary: George Tate, Havre Police Department.

The convention body vigorously debated whether the MPPA should endorse candidates for political office. The association will do research on this issue and reconsider it at next years’ convention in Helena.
